Lumberjacks earn draw with No. 23 SSU

Matt Colwell scored the Jacks' first goal Wednesday.
ROHNERT PARK – Playing against one of the toughest teams on its schedule so far this season, the Humboldt State men's soccer team tied No. 23 nationally ranked Sonoma State 2-2 in double overtime in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Wednesday.

With the result, HSU now stands 4-1-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the CCAA. Sonoma State goes to 7-1-2 and 2-0-2 in the CCAA.

The Seawolves got out of the blocks quick when Ross Middlemiss scored his 11th goal of the season just two minutes into the game. Nathan Medina and Mark Wiedmann got the assists.
“We came out a little flat and they made us pay for it getting the quick goal,” said HSU head men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “After the goal we settled in nicely and got the ball down and played a little bit. It was a very excited and interesting match.”

The Jacks battled back despite giving up the early goal. Forward Matt Colwell scored 21 minutes in after flicking a Ben Vasser pass past SSU keeper Taylor Jones.

Just two minutes before halftime, freshman Kete Meskill recorded his first collegiate goal when he headed in a cross from Ray Lind.

“I felt that if we got one more goal on them, they were done,” said Cumbo. “We could tell that we had all the momentum.”

The score was evened once again nine minutes into the second half on a HSU own goal after a failed clearance by the HSU defense.

“It was evident that after the own goal we lost all the momentum we had,” said Cumbo.

Sonoma State had two chances to win the game in the span of eight seconds just over a minute into the first overtime period, but Andrew Bailey and Scott Preckwinkle's shots both hit the post.

“There's no doubt that if they didn't hit the post (HSU goalkeeper Drew Ryan) would've had them covered,” said Cumbo. Ryan, who came up big when the Jacks needed him to, finished the game with five saves.

The Jacks will face another challenging opponent Friday when they host No. 5 nationally ranked Cal State Los Angeles. Kickoff in the Redwood Bowl is scheduled for 7 p.m.
