ROHNERT PARK – The Humboldt State women's soccer team saw its seven-game unbeaten streak come to an end Wednesday with a 2-1 loss to No. 7 national ranked Sonoma State in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.
With the loss, the Jacks drop to 6-3-1 overall and 2-1-0 in CCAA play while the Seawolves improve to 8-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the CCAA.
“Our possession wasn't what it is usually like today,” said Humboldt State head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “Sonoma is very good at home and they did a good job of creating opportunities for themselves.”
Sonoma State got the scoring started less-than eight minutes in when Alexcia Bosque off an assist from Taylor Edmonds.
However, the Jacks responded just four minutes later on
Allison Lawrence's breakaway, her fifth goal of the season. It was also the only shot the Jacks would get on goal, being outshot by Sonoma State 16-1.
Just three minutes into the second half, the Seawolves took the lead for good when Brittany Peterson recovered a loose ball off of a corner kick to put SSU up 2-1.
“We need to be more organized defensively,” said Cumbo. “I don't think it will be an issue when we return home Friday.”
The Jacks will try to get back to their winning ways when they host Cal State Los Angeles Friday in the Redwood Bowl. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
