ARCATA –
Anna Erway drove home the only goal of the game late in the first half, lifting Humboldt State to a 1-0 win over Oregon Institute of Technology in non-conference women's soccer action Friday night.
Erway took a pass from Alison Lawrence and knocked in the shot off the post late in the first half. Humboldt State had several more chances, but couldn't find the net despite outshooting the Owls, 16-5.
“I still think we need to start the game a little bit faster,” said Humboldt State head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “But we have to give it to OIT, they're a very hardworking and scrappy team.”
The Lumberjacks outshot OIT 16-5, with the majority of the action coming in the first half.
Kelly Sandberg earned her second shutout in as many games, finishing the game with three saves.
“Our defense is continuing to play very well,” said Cumbo. “
Katie Forba played well after not playing in the back for awhile and
Karen Pontoni is proving what kind of player she is.”
The Lumberjacks return to Redwood Bowl on Saturday for a 7 p.m. game against Simpson University.
