ARCATA – Despite a lackluster first half of play, the Humboldt State women's soccer team claimed its third straight victory at home, beating Simpson University 2-0 Saturday.
The Jacks improve to 3-2 while the Redhawks fall to 0-4.
“We came out extremely flat tonight,” said Humboldt State head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “I can honestly say the girls were looking past this game.”
The Redhawks had the best opportunity in the first 45 minutes when they had a shot go off of the post.
“We were extremely lucky we didn't give up a goal in the first half,” said Cumbo. “Simpson did an excellent job of battling against us tonight.”
However, the Jacks turned things on in the second half, recording 10 shots, four of which were on goal.
The first goal of the game came on an own goal in the 58th minute when
Kim Carroll's shot deflected off of a Simpson defender and got past the keeper.
Allison Lawrence added an insurance goal ten minutes later when she took a pass from Carroll and slotted it past the keeper.
“It was a good sign that the adjustments we made at halftime paid off,” said Cumbo. “This game is definitely a reminder that we can't take anything for granted heading into conference play.”
HSU keepers
Kelly Sandberg and
Allyson Riggs combined for the shutout, with Sandberg having to only make one save during her 80 minutes in goal.
The Jacks hit the road next weekend, facing St. Martin's on Friday at 2 p.m. in Lacey, Wash. The Jacks then open California Collegiate Athletic Association play against Chico State Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in Chico.
