SEASIDE - Keeper Kelly Sandberg earned her fifth clean sheet of the season, but the Humboldt State women's soccer team couldn't generate a goal in front of her and settled for a 0-0 tie against the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters on Sunday. The draw leaves the Jacks in third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association North Divison with a 4-6-2 record and a 7-7-2 mark overall. The Otters are 3-10-3 on the year and 2-8-2 in conference.
Sandberg is one shutout shy of tying her single season high of six, which she established last year. For her Lumberjack career, the Bellingham, Wash. product has 12 shutouts and is in third place in the schools all-time list.
In the first 24 minutes of the match, the Otters got off all seven of their first half shots, two of which reach and were turned away by Sandberg. HSU managed six shots in the half by six different players. Carly Kolpin's in the 28th minute and Katie Forba's in the 34th minute the only to reach the CSUMB keeper.
In the second half, Sandberg made saves in the 51st and 68th minute to preserve the shutout, but the Jacks could only get off four shots of their own, with Kylie Riebe's, in the 86th minute, the only one on frame.
At the 93:50 mark, sophomore mid Gracie Gartrell had what was probably the Jacks best scoring opportunity as she banged a shot off the crossbar. The Jacks other shot of the first overtime was off the foot of Sarah Nakamoto, but it was saved by CSUMB keeper Andrea Davis.
Nakamoto took the Jacks' two shots in the second overtime, but both were stopped by Davis and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
Sandberg made five saves and lowered her goals against average for the season to 1.25. Her record is 7-7-2. The Jacks offense was led by Nakamoto's four shots and Forba's two.
Humboldt State returns to the road next week. On Friday they are in Turlock to face Cal State Stanislaus in a 4:30 p.m. kickoff. On Sunday, the side visits Chico State with the match scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m.
