Kelly Sandberg collected her sixth clean sheet of the season as the Humboldt State women's soccer team earned a 0-0 tie against the North Division leading Chico State Wildcats on Sunday afternoon. The tie leaves the Jacks record at 7-8-3 overall, 4-7-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Chico State is 7-4-7 and 5-2-7 in league matches.
Sandberg saved both of the shots that came to her, as the Jacks limited the Wildcats to just five shots on the day. In earning her sixth shutout of the season, Sandberg equaled her personal single-season high. She had six shutouts in 2008 and ties for fifth place in the schools single season list.
Kim Carroll had HSU's first opportunity to score when she banged a shot off the crossbar at the 16:21 mark. Carroll took two more shots in the period as the sides went to halftime at 0-0. The Jacks out shot CSUS 3-2 in the period.
The second half was as much a defensive struggle as the first. The Jacks got off two shots, both within the first 20 minutes. Chico State took three shots, all in the last 25 minutes of the period and regulation time ended 0-0.
Each of the two overtimes was dominated by the Jacks. HSU got three shots off in each extra period, but only
Sarah Nakamoto's in the 93rd minute was on frame and the game ended in a 0-0 tie. Chico State didn't take a shot in either overtime period.
HSU outshot Chico State 11-5 led by Carroll and
Katie Forba who each took three shots. Nakamoto and
Kylie Riebe took two shots apiece.
Sandberg played 110 minutes made two saves and lowered her goals against average to 1.21.
The Jacks play their final home match of 2009 on Friday at 7 p.m. in Redwood Bowl against Sonoma State.
