ARCATA – Three seniors played their final home match on Friday night in Redwood Bowl.
Katie Forba,
Megan Kobler and
Allison Lawrence finished with a bang and a 3-1 victory over the Sonoma State Seawolves. The win improves the Jacks record to 8-8-3 overall and 5-7-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. The Seawolves are now 7-9-3, 5-7-3 in conference.
Barely three minutes into the match,
Karen Pontoni had a throw in that
Carly Kolpin headed to the far post to give the Jacks a lead that they would never relinquish. The tally was Kolpin's third of the season and Pontoni's assist was her second of the year. HSU took its 1-0 lead to half time.
In the second half the Jacks extended their lead. In the 54th minute
Gracie Gartrell netted the first goal of her collegiate career. Kolpin fed her the ball 12 yards out and directly in front of the goal. Gartrell turned and blasted a shot past Seawolves keeper Alexis Sciacqua. The Lumberjacks led 2-0.
Exactly 30 minutes later, at the 83:05 mark SSU scored. Tracy Webster played a cross to Kiley Brown who was at the far post. Brown knock it into the open net from six yards away to cut the HSU lead in half, 2-1.
In a fitting Senior Day moment, HSU's final score came off the work of two of their seniors. With the Seawolves defense and keeper playing up the pitch, Lawrence beat the keeper to a long lob pass and got around her. Unable to maintain her balance Lawrence played the ball to a streaking Forba. Forba popped the ball in to the open net for the final result 3-1
