LA JOLLA – In a battle of two regionally-ranked teams, the No. 5 Humboldt State women's soccer team gave up three unanswered goals and lost to the No. 4 UC San Diego Tritons 3-1 on Sunday.  The loss drops the Jacks record to 7-5-0 overall, 4-4-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.  UCSD improves to 9-2-0, 7-2-0 in conference.

The Tritons opened the scoring in the second minute.  At the 1:15 mark Gabi Hernandez's header found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.  The play was made six yards in front of the goal and was her fourth of the season.

For the half, Kim Carroll led the Jacks with two of the side's four shot.  Both were on goal and turned away by UC San Diego keeper Kristin Armstrong.  UCSD took the 2-0 lead into the locker room.

Ten minute into the second half, UCSD extended its lead to 3-0.  Haley Johnson took a long shot from the left side of the pitch.  Sandberg tipped it overhead, but it found the back of the net.  It was Johnson's first goal of the season.

Both starting keepers were lifted in the second half.  Sandberg came out at the 67:19 mark in favor of Jennie Paugh, a native of Oakdale, Calif. and product of Oakdale High School.  It was the first action of Paugh's collegiate career.

The Jacks lone goal came a few minutes later.  At the 76:09 mark, sophomore Sarah Nakamoto blasted a penalty kick past UCSD's Armstrong to cut the lead to 3-1.  The goal was Nakamoto's second of the season and pelled the end of Armstrong's afternoon.

Armstrong made four saves while allowing one goal.  Kimberly Cushing entered the game and played the remaining 13:51 with out facing a shot on goal.
