Tough home stand ahead for Lumberjacks

ARCATA –The Humboldt State men's soccer team (2-8-2, 1-6-1) returns to Redwood Bowl for a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association matches this week.  Friday the team welcomes the No. 2 Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.  Then on Sunday, the Jacks hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills.  The Lumberjacks and Toros are scheduled to kick off at 11:30 a.m.

The Jacks earned their first conference win on Friday, a 3-1 result at Cal State East Bay in Hayward. Sunday saw the Jacks in Southern California facing the Tritons of UC San Diego. Despite more than doubling the UCSD shot output, HSU couldn't maintain the momentum and fell to the Tritons, 2-1.

Head-to-Head
Humboldt State's record against Cal State Los Angeles is 1-3-0.   This will be the fourth meeting between these two as conference opponents.  As a member of the GNAC in 2003, HSU traveled to CSULA and dropped a non-conference overtime match, 2-1.  As members of the CCAA, each team has defended its home field.  The Jacks won 2-1 in Arcata in 2006.  The Golden Eagles have won the last two meetings, 3-2 in 2007 and 2-0 in 2008, both in Los Angeles. …Sunday will mark the fifth meeting between HSU and Cal State Dominguez Hills with the Toros leading the series 4-1-0.  The Lumberjacks CSUDH met twice as non-conference opponents, 1981 and 2003.  Cal State Dominguez Hills took both matches 2-0 and 5-1.  In 2006, as CCAA members, the Jacks won 1-0 at Carson, but have dropped the last two, 2-1 and 2-0.

Johnson's Comments
“The (Cal State) East Bay match was a typical start for us.  We gave up an early goal and played pretty sloppy defensively for the first five minutes of the match.  The rest of the match they played the style we have been practicing.  The intensity was there and once they put their foot on the gas pedal they never let up.  It was a great to see how well we played on that field.  We scored some great goals and gained a lot of confidence from that game.” … “At UCSD it was a similar story – we play poorly the first five minutes and the last six minutes of the first half and gave up soft goals.  But for the middle 34-35 minutes we took it too them and had chances, but we just didn't finish.  We had them on the ropes in the first half.  They made something like seven substitutions to try to counter our play.  In the second half we had the majority of the play and some good opportunities.  It was a tough weekend in the sense that we lost and gave up some soft goals, but I am very encouraged that we worked the system and played well for the vast majority of the time.” … “This will be a tough, tough weekend for the men, but we are facing two teams that are either not too familiar with this pitch (Cal State L.A.) or plain haven't played on it at all (Cal State Dominguez Hills).  We have that to our advantage.  I hope that we can carry the good feeling of last weekend into this week.”
