Jacks shock No. 1 Cal State L.A. 3-0

ARCATA – Putting together their best performance of the season, and arguably in the history of HSU men's soccer, the Jacks defeated No.1 ranked Cal State Los Angeles 3-0 on Friday night in Redwood Bowl.  The win improves the Lumberjacks' record to 3-8-2 overall, 2-6-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.  The Golden Eagles are now 11-1-1, 9-1-1 in conference action.

For just the fourth time in 13 matches the Jacks scored first.  Junior striker Josh Suggs, who had a pair of first half goals, got HSU on the board at the 14 minutes, 47 seconds mark.  Off a diagonal feed from mid Tony Ramirez, Suggs got behind the defense.  When Cal State L.A.'s keeper Tobais Hummel came out to cut down the angle, Suggs flicked a shot over the head of Hummel and into the empty net for a 1-0 lead.

Nine minutes later he did it again, taking another long diagonal through-ball, this time from Scott Mariani. Suggs was one–on-one with the Cal State keeper.  As Hummel came out, Suggs again flicked it over him to give the Jacks a 2-0 lead.

With just over 10 minutes to play in the half Suggs had his best chance for a hat trick.  He got the ball behind the Golden Eagles' defense and shot it just wide to the right side of the net.  The Jack took a 2-0 lead to the half, out-shooting CSULA 5-3.

Eight minutes into the second period HSU got the final goal of the night.  Mid Ben Vasser had a throw in.  From six yards out, right in front of the goal, senior Doug Simpson tapped the ball to senior Tony Ramirez, who shot it to the near post for the 3-0 margin that would be the final score.

Suggs' goals were his six and seventh of the season, which leads the Lumberjacks' attack.

“I can't believe this,” Suggs said.  “They are the top team in the country and we just took it to them.  This is such a huge win for us. Tonight we performed.  We didn't give up any soft goals and our defense was phenomenal.

“Their defense played really high and that allowed me to get behind them and score.  My grandparents came all the way from New Mexico to watch me play.  Right now I am on cloud nine.”

“From start to finish, that was the best that this team has played as a team this season,” head coach Christian Johnson said.  “Over the last three matches this has been building and tonight, it wasn't pretty, but we took advantage of what we were given and for the program this is a fantastic win.”

The Jacks return to action on Sunday when they host Cal State Dominguez Hills in an 11:30 a.m. kickoff.
