Oceana Matsubu and
Danielle Wells each recorded double-digit kills and the Jacks pushed Cal State Stanislaus to four sets, but the Warriors won the match, 22-25, 25-17, 27-25, 25-18, Friday night.
Hoping to get revenge for a 3-0 loss on Oct. 3 in Lumberjack Arena, HSU took the opening set and battled the Warriors for the next three sets before falling three games to one.
The loss drops the Jacks record to 7-20 on the season, 3-16 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. CSUS is now 10-17 overall, 4-15 in conference play.
Matsubu led HSU with double-double, 12 kills and 16 digs. Wells hit .400 for the match (10-2-20) and added 10 kills.
Joliann Arzadon also added a double-double with 36 assists and 18 digs.
After taking an 8-7 lead in the first set on a Wells kill, the Jacks maintained and increased their advantage to five points on three occasions. Trailing 21-16, the Warriors ran off six straight points to take a 22-21 advantage, before HSU closed out the set 25-22.
After dropping the second set, the Jacks came out in the third, took a 3-0 lead and maintained it to 13-11 on a Matsubu kill. CSUS went on a 4-0 run to take a 15-13 lead and pushed that advantage to 23-18. Six straight points for HSU put them back in front 24-23. The score was tied at 25-25 before the Warriors won the set 27-25.
In the fourth set Humboldt State took an early 9-3 lead after an Arzadon kill.
CSU Stanislaus tied he set at 12-12 and never looked back, cruising to a 25-18 win.
Humboldt State finishes the weekend road trip on Saturday at Chico State. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
