Overtime goal lifts Chico State over HSU

ARCATA — Chico State capitalized on a late sliding tackle just inside the corner of the goal box, converting a penalty kick to steal a 1-0 victory over Humboldt State in the second overtime of Friday's California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer opener.

With only 4 minutes, 41 seconds remaining in the second extra pariod, the Wildcats' Kyle Crain slipped the straight-on boot into the left side of the goal, past sliding HSU keeper Kyle Verle.

Chico State, ranked No. 3 in the NCAA West Region, improved to 4-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in league games. Humboldt State dropped to 1-3-1 and 0-1-0.

"It was a true foul, and a mistake we shouldn't make," HSU head coach CJ Johnson said. "Those kind of freshman mistakes are going to be hard to overcome every time."

While both squads finished with 11 shots, Humboldt State's chances throughout the game were generally stronger scoring chances. Chico State goalkeeper Michale Keohane was up to the task, however, corralling six saves to keep the Jacks scoreless.

Both defenses played a stingy first half, Humboldt State firing five shots at Keohane and the Wildcats managing four chances to score.

Humboldt State generated its best opportunity with just over three minutes left in the first half, putting together three shots in rapid succession at the Chico State goal. Keohane saved the first two chances, and the third, off the foot of Ben Vasser, launched just high over the crossbar.

"We missed too many great opportunities," Johnson said. "We dominated play and couldn't come up with a goal. We have to be more effective in those situations if we're going to be successful."

Chico State made a bid for the victory in regulation, rushing the goal as time wound to a conclusion. Verle preserved the scoreless tie by stopping a straight-on bullet from Chico State's Evan Armstrong.

Humboldt State is back on the field Sunday, taking on Cal State Stanislaus in another CCAA battle at 11 a.m. in Redwood Bowl.
