ARCATA — A single score was all Chico State needed to hold off Humboldt State on Friday and claim a 1-0 win over the Lumberjacks in Redwood Bowl.
Humboldt State's record is now 3-2-0 for the season and 0-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association heading into Sunday's 2:30 p.m. game against CSU Stanislaus. Chico State improved to 3-2-0 overall, 1-0-0 in league.
"On offense in the second half we went to long balls, and that's not what we want to do," Humboldt State head coach CJ Johnson said. "We weren't possessing the ball in the offensive zone. If we take one or two more passes in the attacking zone, we'll generate better chances to score."
Chico State managed the only scoring eight minutes into the second period when Ali Sward lifted a ball from the corner across the box. The Wildcats showcased their superior skills in the air, Melissa Pease rising for a header in front of the goal and deflecting the ball into the net.
Natalie Bensky earned the shutout in goal for Chico State, coming up with three saves while the Wildcats' defense limited the Jacks to six total shots. Humboldt State's
Kelly Sandberg was equally effective, stopping a pair of Wildcat chances.
Neither team could wrinkle the net in the opening 45 minutes, each squad managing four shots. With less than 30 seconds remaining in the half, HSU's Sara Nakamoto came closer to scoring than anyone else in the period when she booted a 20-meter shot that tipped the bottom of the crossbar and deflected out.
"In the first half our possession game was working, but in the second half it wasn't effective," Johnson said. "We gave them chances and they took advantage of it. That was the difference in the game."
