ARCATA — Cal State Stanislaus capitalized on Humboldt State's defensive misplays Sunday to take a 3-1 men's soccer victory over the Lumberjacks in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match.

Humboldt State's record fell to 1-4-1 overall and is now 0-2 for CCAA contests. Cal State Stanislaus boosted its record to 4-1-0 for the season and 1-1-0 in league.

An own goal allowed the Warriors to tie the game after Humboldt State struck early in the second half for a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes into the period a ball played back to Jacks' keeper Kyle Verle trickled into the right corner for the equalizer.

"We fumbled a deflected free kick and gave them a goal," HSU head coach CJ Johnson said. "That's the fourth game in a row we've made those kind of mistakes."

Following a scoreless first half, Humboldt State had grabbed the lead on a slick play that was set up by Zack Hammond from deep in the corner. Josh Suggs caught the pass in stride, driving the ball into the net for a 1-0 HSU lead.

Cal State Stanislaus scored the go-ahead goal when the Jacks' defense again broke down, providing a one-on-one chip shot right in front of the goalmouth. Oscar Ramirez lifted the ball over Verle for the score, with Edgar Santana awarded the assist.

Victor Regalado all but sealed the win in the 76th minute when he dribbled into the box unimpaired after a collision took an HSU defender out of the play, striking the ball inside the far post for a 3-1 Warriors' lead.

"We keep making defensive passes to the feet of a forward," Johnson said. "Mental errors are killing us. We let teams hang around and let them have a chance."

Early in the game the Jacks generated several strong scoring opportunities, pressuring the CSUS defense with eight shots, half of them on goal. Keeper Victor Rosales was up to the task, stopping all four, including an angled ball he tipped to deflect wide of the net.

Later in the half it was the Warriors who held offensive control, getting off four of their total of six shots in the final eight minutes. Two of Verle's three saves were fairly routine, but the best CSUS chance came on a bullet from Jose Velasquez that he deflected of the crossbar.

Rosales finished with five saves for the Warriors, as did HSU's Verle. Humboldt outshot CSU Stanislaus, 14-11.

Humboldt State goes on the road for back-to-back games this week, facing Cal State San Bernardino on Friday and Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.
