POMONA — Arielle Kern achieved her second double-goal performance of the season, helping Humboldt State come from behind and earn a 3-2 women's soccer win over Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday.

With the victory, the Lumberjacks improved their record to 5-3-0 overall and evened it up at 2-2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal Poly Pomona dropped to 6-2-0, and is also 2-2-0 in the CCAA.

Kern scored twice on free kicks, the first coming only 2 minutes, 37 seconds into the game to give HSU an early edge. Cal Poly's Cody McClure quickly countered three minutes later, receiving the ball from Mary Carroll on the left side, and then cutting right to put it into the net.

The Broncos forged a 2-1 lead before the half when Lauren Skachenko passed the ball ahead to Valerie Strawn, who finished the one-on-one against HSU goalkeeper Kelly Sandberg.

Fourteen minutes into the second half the Jacks pulled even. Kylie Riebe sent the ball to Katie Forba up top on the left side, and Forba punched the ball in from there for a 2-2 tie.

Kern's heroics came in the 75th minute when she again connected on a free kick, putting the Jacks up 3-2. Sandberg and the Jacks' defense stopped all further CPP scoring attempts, the senior finishing with three saves.

Both teams managed nine shots in in the game, including seven each in the second half. Humboldt State earned five corner kicks to the Broncos' two.

The physical battle saw four cards issued, three of them on Humboldt State. Forba received her second of the day with only 1:11 left to play, forcing the Jacks to play shorthanded until the clock ran out.

The Lumberjacks return to Arcata for this week's league games, facing Cal State Monterey Bay at 7 p.m. Friday and San Francisco State at 2 p.m. Sunday.
