Jacks down Otters 2-1, move closer to 1st place

Kim Carroll scored the Jacks' first goal in Friday's win over CSUMB.
ARCATA – Arielle Kern scored an unassisted goal at the 55:37 mark which proved to be the game-winner and the Humboldt State women's soccer team defeated the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters, 2-1, in Redwood Bowl on Friday.

The win improves the Jacks to 6-3-0 on the season and 3-2-0 in the North Divison of the California Collegiate Athletic Association.  The Otters fall to 2-6-1 overall and 1-4-0 in the CCAA North.

The win, combined with a Chico State loss at Cal State Los Angeles, moved the Jacks to within two points of first place in the CCAA North Divison.

The Jacks started quickly as in the 9th minute junior Kim Carroll headed a Sarah Nakamoto cross to the near post for a 1-0 lead.  It was the 11 goal of her Lumberjack career and moved her into a tie for 11th on the all-time list.

“For the first 10 to 15 minutes I thought we played good possession soccer,” head coach Christian Johnson said.  “They had good team speed and made it difficult for us to play our game after that.  They are very scrappy.”

The Jacks held the lead into the half and took a 4-3 advantage in shots to the locker room.

Kern got her game winner in the 56th minute, a lob over the Otters keeper for give HSU a 2-0 lead. It was her team leading sixth of the season

“I felt very fortunate to have Arielle (Kern) get that ball and tuck it away,” Johnson added.  “We definitely took advantage of their keepers height and that she was not comfortable coming off the line.”

CSUMB got on the board at the 74:59 mark.  After playing numerous long through balls with out success they connected to Korie Soares who buried the ball to the far post to cut the Jacks lead to 2-1. 

Kelly Sandberg earned the win and improved her record to 6-3-0 on the season.

The Jacks return to CCAA action on Sunday as they take on the Gators of San Francisco State at 2 p.m. in Redwood Bowl.
