Gators second half too much for Jacks

ARCATA – The Humboldt State men's soccer team played a good first half on Sunday, but couldn't convert their scoring opportunities.  The Gators of San Francisco State played a good second half, scored three times and defeated the Jacks 3-0 in Redwood Bowl.  The loss drops the Jacks record to 1-7-2, 0-5-1 in the California Collegiate Athletics Association.  SFSU is now 5-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play.

In the first 25 minutes of the game the Jacks out shot the Gators 5-0.  Striker Josh Suggs took three of those shots, all of which were on net.  San Francisco State didn't get its first shot until the 28th minute and their best scoring chance came at the 29:10 mark when Dylan Glass took a shot that glanced of the post after a scramble in front of the net, off a Gators corner kick.

At the 42:43 mark, Jacks senior midfielder Tony Ramirez blasted a shot that also hit off the post. As the two sides went to the half, the Jacks had out shot the Gators 7-4, but the score was 0-0.

“I thought we played a good first half and we needed that,” head coach Christian Johnson said.  “For about 35 minutes of the first half we probably had the better run of play.  We were creative and executed things that we had worked on all week.”

“At half time we reiterated that we couldn't afford to make any mental mistakes and needed to finish our chances on offense.  We had one shot hit the post in the first half and had a few other opportunities, but not enough on frame.”

In the 54th minute, the Gators struck.  Glass threw the ball in from near the right corner.  It crossed the goal and Antonio Ugarte, sitting at the back post, tapped it in for a 1-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, Spencer Schwant hit a cross from the right side that again went through the box and found Ugarte's foot, for his second tap-in of the match.  The Gators led 2-0.

Jacks goalie Kyle Verle was replaced at the 67:46 mark by sophomore David Zwick.  In the 74th minute, SFSU got its last tally of the day as Arnol Arceta lobbed a ball from 25 yards out over the head of Zwick.

“Soccer is a funny game,” added Johnson.  “We certainly haven't had any luck.  The ball hasn't bounced our way, and now because we are on this streak of not winning games you can see the let down when things don't go our way.  This team has to find a way to rebound after being scored upon, to keep fighting.  The personality of the team right now is not that way.  We have to have the mindset that we are just going to move on and keep playing.

“I was happy with half the game and not so happy with the rest.”

Verle took the loss.  His record is now 1-7-2.  The Jacks outshot the Gators 15-9, with Suggs taking six shots, five of which were on goal.

The Jacks return to action next week as they travel to Hayward to take on Cal State East Bay on Friday, Oct. 2 before making their way to La Jolla for a meeting with the Tritons of UCSD on Sunday, Oct.4.
