Lumberjacks go down early and fall at WWU

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Humboldt State men's soccer team gave up a goal in the second minute of its match against Western Washington, and was never able to recover on the way to a 2-1 loss on Saturday.

The loss leaves the HSU 1-1-1 on the year, while the Vikings improved to 2-1-0.

WWU's Brendan Quilici scored at the 1:17 mark.  He took a feed from Kellan Brown and shot from 16 yards out to give Western Washington a quick 1-0 lead.

The score remained the same until the 59th minute. Brown took the ball at the center circle and dribbled all the way into the penalty box.  He finished his run with a shot form 10 yards out that hit the back of the net in the lower right corner to increase the Vikings advantage to 2-0.

The Jacks offense broke through at the 65:48 mark.  Josh Suggs hit a low cross that junior Scott Mariani tapped in to cut the Western Washington lead in half, 2-1.  The goal was Mariani's second on the season and Suggs' assist was his first of the year.

Keeper Kyle Verle made six saves in the losing effort.  His record is now 1-1-1.

On Monday the Lumberjacks will face their third straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponent when they take on the Saints of Saint Martin's University (2-2-0) in a 2 p.m. kickoff in Lacey, Wash.  The match is the last of a three-game road trip to Washington.
