SAN FRANCISCO — Battling back from two games down, Humboldt State rallied to defeat Hawaii Pacific on Saturday to complete a sweep of all four matches at the California Clash volleyball tournament hosted by San Francisco State.
The Lumberjacks evened their season record to 4-4, reversing their fortunes from last week's appearance at the Seawolf Spike. HSU earned the 23-25, 13-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-10 victory over the Sea Warriors after taking a 25-8, 25-15, 25-20 win from Saint Martin's University earlier in the day.
Again, it was the all-around efforts of junior setter Jo Arzadon leading the way for the Lumberjacks. In the final match, Arzadon had 42 assists, 14 digs and five kills to fuel the rally.
"It really was a team effort, but Jo did everything for us, all over the court," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "Hawaii Pacific has been a good program for a long time, so this was a nice win for us."
Oceana Matsubu had 22 kills and
Lesley Kalbrener added 13 to pace HSU.
Danielle Wells contributed four more blocks, giving her 32 on the season and moving her within 12 of the No. 2 position on the HSU all-time list.
"Our block was there again, and that's a direct result of our serve being effective," Woodstra said.
Taking control early and maintaining it throughout, the HSU volleyball team rolled past Saint Martin's University in the day's early match.
Crisp hitting got the Jacks started in the first game, which finished with Humboldt State posting a tidy .538 hitting percentage. Saint Martin's made adjustments and improved during the next two games, but HSU remained composed and held its lead throughout.
Wells had eight kills and Matsubu contributed six with four blocks.
Allison Drobish achieved a team-high six blocks and
Dani Nelson had 15 digs for the Lumberjacks.
Humboldt State opens California Collegiate Athletic Association play this week, hosting Cal State Los Angeles on Thursday and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
