LACEY, Wash. – With a chance to take two out of three matches on their first road trip of the season, Humboldt State's women's soccer team used a
Carly Kolpin goal with barely more than two minutes remaining in the second overtime to defeat Saint Martin's 1-0 on Monday.
The win improves the Lumberjacks record to 3-1-0 on the season, while Saint Martin's falls to 3-2-0 overall.
For the second game in a row Kolpin, a freshman out of Eugene, Ore., had the game-winning tally. At the 107:52 mark, she took a pass from Arcata High School grad
Karen Pontoni and chipped the ball over the head of the Saints keeper to end the match in the second overtime 1-0.
The goal was Kolpin's second of the year. Pontoni's assist was her first of 2009.
Arielle Kern was also credited with an assist on the score.
Keeper
Kelly Sandberg made nine saves to secure the victory and notch her second shutout of the season. She now has nine shutouts for her career and is just one shy of a third place tie with Lydia Rodriguez (1998-99) on the schools all-time list.
For the third match in a row the Jacks were out shot, today 13-9. But in the second overtime, HSU pressed their advantage, out shot SMU 2-0 and got the winner.
The Jacks return home this weekend and open California Collegiate Athletics Association action with a pair of matches. On Friday they take on Chico State (2-1-0) at 7 p.m. in Redwood Bowl. They finish the two game set on Sunday with a 2 p.m. kickoff against CSU Stanislaus (4-0-0).
