Women's soccer falls 2-0 to SFSU

ARCATA – Two first half goals by the Gators of San Francisco State sent the Humboldt State women's soccer team to its fourth straight loss on Friday night in Redwood Bowl.  The final score was 2-0.

The win improves SFSU's record to 5-2-2 overall, 4-2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.  The Jacks fall to 1-8-0, 1-6-0 in conference play.

In the 13th minute the Gators Kara Cunningham's shot was stopped by Jacks' keeper Jennie Paugh but not controlled.  The ball leaked behind Paugh right to Michelle Kay who popped it in at the far post for a 1-0 lead.

At the 33:25 mark Andrea Carey took a corner kick that found its way into the net with out being touched.  SFSU led 2-0.

For the half the Jacks were outshot 8-to-1.  HSU's only opportunity in the first 45 minutes was a shot on-goal by Arielle Kern.

“I was happy with the way we came out,” head coach Christian Johnson said.  “The urgency to get forward and attack was great but we didn't get the shots.  Unfortunately we got caught up in an air game and didn't play possession at all for the lasts 25 minutes of the first half.”

In the second half HSU outshot the Gators 6-to-4 but none of its shots were on frame.

“We wanted to make an adjustment at half time and stop with the air game,” Johnson added, “but the team didn't execute it in the second half and that played right into San Francisco State's hands.

“Like many games this year we allowed soft, inexcusable goals.  That was the difference tonight and has been all year.”

HSU hosts Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. in Redwood Bowl.
