Otters blank HSU 1-0

Sarah Nakamoto had two shots against CSUMB.

SEASIDE – The Humboldt State women's soccer team allowed a goal in the 23rd minute, which the Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) Otters made stand up in a 1-0 win on Friday.

The loss drops the Lumberjacks overall record to 3-13-1, 3-11-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.  CSUMB improves to 3-14-0, 2-13-0 in conference play.

In the first 10 minutes, the Jacks applied pressure in the offensive third getting four shots off.  The best chance to score came just 27 seconds in, when a Sarah Nakamoto shot slammed off the crossbar.  Chelsea LaRue, just 16 seconds later, put another shot on frame that Otters' keeper Graciela Holguin saved.  In the 10th minute Kaitlyn Nord also put a shot on goal, but was turned away by Holguin.

The Otters were also on the mark early on.  They had three shots in the first 16 minutes, two of which were on frame and saved by HSU keeper Jennie Paugh. 

At the 21:29 mark, Alyssa Malfatti played a corner kick into the six-yard box where there was a scramble for the ball.  Sherene Thompson found it on her foot and put it to the back of the net for a 1-0 Cal State Monterey Bay lead.

The sides played even for the rest of the half with CSUMB taking two shots and the Jacks' Arielle Kern firing one for HSU.

Carly Kolpin and Nakamoto each had a shot in the second half, but neither was on frame.  The Otters took four shots, two of which Paugh stopped

For the game HSU was outshot 10-to-7 and 6-to-3 in shots on goal.  Paugh made four saves in the loss, while Holguin had three.

The Lumberjacks wrap up the 2010 season on Sunday in San Francisco when they face the Gators of San Francisco State in a 2 p.m. kickoff.
