ARCATA –
Quintin Aguilar's goal in the 54th minute was the game winner as the Humboldt State men's soccer team defeated the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay 2-1 Sunday afternoon in Redwood Bowl ending a three-game winless steak for the Jacks.
The win improves HSU's record to 2-6-2 overall, 2-5-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Cal State Monterey Bay falls to 0-7-2, 0-6-2 in conference action.
With HSU leading 1-0, Zack Hammond received a long pass, which he flicked over the heads of two Otters defenders. The ball came down between
Josh Suggs and Aguilar. Aguilar took it and fired a shot high to the near post to give the Jacks a 2-0 lead. It was the first goal of his collegiate career and Hammond's first assist of the season.
Humboldt State had taken the lead in the first half on Suggs' team-leading fourth goal of the year. At the 28:29 mark, Scott Mariani played a perfect long throughball right to the foot of Suggs who had gotten behind the defense. Suggs drew the keeper out and juked him just inside the 18-yard box. The keeper went down and Suggs pushed the ball into the open net.
The goal was the 18th of Suggs' career and moved him to within one of tying Lalo Serrano for seventh place on the program's all-time list.
It was the first goal for the Jacks this season that was not off a set piece or a penalty kick.
Working on offensive consistency, the Jacks took seven shots in each half and scored a goal in each.
HSU had preserved the shutout for 87 minutes, but at the 87:56 mark Beau Villanueva collected a free ball inside the 18 and flicked it just over the outstretched arms of Jacks' keeper
Kyle Verle to cut the lead to its final margin 2-1.
Verle made four saves in the win, his second of the year.
