ARCATA – Senior defender
Ray Lind's header in the 105th minute gave the Humboldt State men's soccer team its first win of the season, 3-2, over Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday in Redwood Bowl.
“This win was so crucial for this team,” Lind said. “It was overtime and the crowd really helped us with home field advantage. We can really feel when they are behind us and today they were. I'm just glad we were able to take this one in front of them.”
The win improves the Jacks record to 1-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. CPP falls to 3-1-0, 1-1-0 in conference action.
Michael Powell, a redshirt freshman who was playing center back, took a free kick from just beyond 40 yards at the 104:47 mark that sailed to the front of the net. Lind out jumped two defenders and banged home the winner.
“That was the biggest goal of my life,” Lind said. “The coaches started me today and I'm glad I was able to contribute to the win.”
Without Powell the Jacks wouldn't have even gotten to overtime.
Trailing 2-1 with just under three minutes to play, Powell stepped up and from 45 yards out lifted a free kick toward the Bronco net that senior striker
Josh Suggs headed home to tie the match and send it to overtime.
“Mikey Powell really stepped up today,” Lind said. “He put the ball right were it needed to be on my and Josh's goal. If it weren't for him we wouldn't have these smiles on our faces.”
The two assists were Powell's first of his collegiate career.
The Jacks opened the scoring at the 24:18 mark when senior defender Tim Haden took a free ball inside the six and blasted it home for his and the team's first goal of the season. The goal was the second of Haden's career.
However, the lead was short lived as the Broncos scored off a free kick from the top of the 18 in the 32nd minute. Nicholas Jimenez was credited with the goal. Two minutes later CPP's Boris Beta got his foot on a ball that was loose in the box and scored to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead at the 33:40 mark. Cal Poly Pomona held that lead until Suggs' goal in the 88th minute.
Jacks keeper
Kyle Verle had two saves in earning his first win of the season. The Broncos played two goalkeepers. Todd Andrews played the first half and made one save and allowed one goal. Tony Iniguez played the second half and both overtime periods making three saves and allowing two goals in taking the loss.
“This was a huge win,” head coach Christian Johnson said. “We finally put the ball in the net and this will build our confidence going forward.”
