Jacks fall 1-0 in Washington downpour

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – In a steady downpour, the Western Washington University Vikings scored in the 15th minute and made it stand up as they defeated the Humboldt State women's soccer team 1-0 in the final non-conference match of the year for the Lumberjacks.

With the win Western Washington is now 2-0-1 overall, while the Jacks slip to 0-2-0 on the season.

Box Score

WWU's Joana Houplin found the back of the net at the 14:53 mark for her second goal of the season.  The 25-yard strike was set up by a quick give and go with Megan Chapin who was credited with an assist.

It was the Vikings first shot, and one of two they took in of the half.  The Jacks managed just one shot in the first 45 minutes, from Talya Crosby at 18:33.

In the second half HSU took four shots, two of which were on frame. Crosby had the Jacks best chance to tie the game when her shot from just inside the penalty area forced WWU keeper Jamie Arthurs to make a diving save. The Lumberjacks final opportunity came in the final 10 seconds off a corner kick, but Arielle Kern's header was deflected wide and time expired.

Western Washington outshot the HSU 11-to-5 for the match.  Arthurs made two saves in the win.  Kelly Sandberg, HSU's keeper, made six saves in taking the loss.

Humboldt State returns home for their next four matches.  The open California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday, September 10 against Cal State San Bernardino at 4:30 p.m. in Redwood Bowl.
