Women’s soccer looks to get on track at home

ARCATA – After two road losses to open the 2010 campaign the Humboldt State women's soccer team (0-2-0, 0-0-0 CCAA) opens conference play by welcoming the Coyotes of Cal State Bernardino on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.  Then on Sunday, the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos are in town for an 11:30 a.m. tilt.  The California Collegiate Athletic Association action takes place in Redwood Bowl.

The Jacks were defeated twice last week in Washington.  On Friday No. 17 Seattle Pacific beat the HSU 3-0, then on Monday, in Bellingham, they lost 1-0 to Western Washington.

Head-to-Head

Humboldt State's record against Cal State San Bernardino is 3-5-0.   Last season the Coyotes defeated the Jacks 2-0 in San Bernardino.  Since 2006, as members of the CCAA, the teams have split the series 2-2-0 with each team holding serve on its home field. … The Jacks defeated Cal Poly Pomona 3-2 last year in Pomona.  The all-time series now stands at 4-4-0.  Since joining the CCAA HSU holds a 3-1-0 advantage over the Broncos.

Johnson's Comments
“We have given up four goals, all of which have been from outside the 18, and three have been from long distance.  We've got to stop giving up the space that allows those shots to be taken.  Only one of the four goals has been earned.  The other three were very soft. Overall, I like what our team has done offensively and defensively, but we need someone to step up and be dangerous in the offensive third.  We can only play defense for so long.” … “San Bernardino will be a tough team to beat.  It will be interesting to see how the two teams line up against each other.” … “Pomona is different from game-to-game and year-to-year so we will have to see what they bring and try to counter it.”

Lumberjack Notes

HSU is 11-4-0 all-time in home openers. They are 2-2-0 in CCAA home openers since joining the conference in 2006. … Freshman Talya Crosby leads the Jacks attack with four shots.  Senior Arielle Kern has taken two shots.  Keeper Kelly Sandberg is 0-2-0 while playing 180 minutes.  She has made 11 saves in the 15 shots that have been on frame and her goals against average is 2.00.

Opponents Notes
The Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes (2-0-0, 0-0-0 CCAA) opened last weekend with 1-0 and 2-1 wins over Biola and Grand Canyon respectively.  The CSUSB offense is led by Jani Carmona, who has two goals and Kristina Gomez who has one.  The Coyotes are led by first year head coach Travis Clarke. …Cal Poly Pomona (2-0-0, 0-0-0 CCAA) earned a pair of shutouts last week with a 1-0 win over Notre Dame de Namur and a 3-0 defeat of Dominican.  With two goals Jennifer Rivera leads the Broncos attack.  Melissa Garcia and Gloria Gonzalez have the teams other two goals. Keepers Sarah Rohman and Natalia Guevera have each played one game and have yet to allow a goal. Isabelle Harvey, in her fifth season, leads the Broncos.  Her CPP record is 36-35-7.
