Jacks finish opportunities, shut out Pioneers

Box Score
HAYWARD – A balanced attack throughout the whole 90 minutes helped the Humboldt State Lumberjacks get back on track with a 4-0 win against the Cal State East Bay Pioneers Friday night. The win marks the third Jacks' victory in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, snapping a six-game slide.

Humboldt State improves to 3-9 overall, 3-8 in CCAA, while Cal State East Bay drops to 2-11 overall, 1-11 in conference action.

"It was an all around good day," said head coach C.J. Johnson. "I'm certainly happy with our possession. We worked hard to put ourselves in good goal-scoring positions and got good opportunities off it."

The Jacks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off a goal in the 17th minute by Ray Lind. Eric Baumgardner assisted the goal by throwing the ball into the box, where Lind collected it and sent it to the lower right corner past Bryce Bookhamer.

"When we build out of the back and own the midfield, we become a much better team and that's what happened tonight," said Johnson. "Our midfield won balls to create opportunities to get balls forward and our forwards combined well. Overall, it was a good team effort to get us the result."

It didn't take long for the Jacks to strike again as Braxton Griffin scored an unassisted goal in the 26th minute, going one-on-one against Bookhamer to give the Jacks a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

The second half belonged to junior Zach Hammond who delivered twice for the Jacks. His first goal came in the 63rd minute on a penalty kick, before getting an unassisted goal in the 68thminute.

"I felt all were quality goals, even the penalty kick," said Johnson. "We put ourself in good position to get chances and had good finishes."

Senior goalkeeper Kyle Verle had a solid game throughout as he picked up his second shutout of the season, making three saves on the night.

Humboldt State is back in action Sunday afternoon as they take on Cal State Monterey Bay, looking for a sweep on the weekend's road trip. In their last meeting, the Jacks held off the Otters with a 1-0 victory.
