Seawolves down Jacks in three sets

ARCATA – After upsetting a ranked team over the weekend, Humboldt State couldn't pull out a win over visiting No. 24 Sonoma State. The Seawolves only allowed the Jacks to take the lead four times all match—the highest was a two-point lead—as the Sonoma State dropped Humboldt State 3-0 Wednesday night (25-15, 25-15, 25-19).

With the win, SSU improves to 16-3 overall, 13-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while HSU falls to 6-12 overall, 3-11 in conference. The Jacks will have a short one-day break to recover before hosting Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

The Seawolves held Oceana Matsubu to only 10 kills on the night. Ashley Neale and Brooke Ferguson tried to keep the Jacks in the game defensively with 15 and 11 digs, respectively. Keala Peterson sparked the Sonoma State offensive with 15 kills, with Kelsey Hull following closely after with 10 kills of her own. Taylor Krenwinkel tallied 11 digs for the Seawolves.

Sonoma State started the first set 2-0 off a Jack attack error and a kill from Kelsey Hull, but the Jacks tied it at 2-2 off a service ace from Allison Drobish and an attack error by a Seawolf. The set would then turn only in favor of Sonoma State, with the Seawolves keeping the lead for the rest of the set. The Jacks battles and kept the lead lower than four points until SSU broke free, getting its largest margin with a 10-point lead at 22-12, before ending the set at 25-15.

Just like in the first set, Sonoma State kept HSU from passing the 15-point mark. Humboldt State was able to take the lead four times, but never with more than a two-point margin. The Jacks came from behind 12-13 to grab what would be their last lead of the match at 14-13 off a kill from Drobish and an error from SSU. The Seawolves set themselves into overdrive and finished the match once again 25-15.

The Jacks pushed in the third set and came close to grabbing some momentum, coming back from a 16-21 hole to 19-21, but could not break into the 20s. Four unanswered points by Hull, Brooke Moore and Peterson ended the set at 25-19 and the match in three sets.

Humboldt State's Friday match against Cal State Monterey Bay will be the "Dig For a Cure" night to bring awareness to breast cancer. Throughout the month of October, each CCAA volleyball team is designating a special match to highlight Breast Cancer Awareness month. Each team will wear pink warm-up shirts and the match will be played with pink volleyballs to honor those battling, or who have battled, breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the match as well.
