Box Score LA JOLLA – Shelby Wong scored two early first half goals, dooming Humboldt State as the Lumberjacks were unable to recover against No. 8-ranked UC San Diego Friday night in a 5-0 defeat. The loss drops the Jacks to 2-10-2 overall, 1-10-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The victory puts UCSD at 10-1-4 overall, 9-1-3 in conference action.
The Tritons stole the game's momentum in the 13th minute of play when Wong scored her first goal of the game. It didn't take long for Wong to strike again—just four minutes, in fact—as she tapped her second goal in from a yard out giving UCSD an early 2-0 lead.
Humboldt State held the Tritons to only those two goals, but could not produce much offensively. The UCSD defense held the Jacks to just one shot in the first half, resulting in a 2-0 score at the half.
The second half began very similarly to the first with Wong striking once again. In the 52nd minute, Wong completed her hattrick, giving the top-ten UCSD team a 3-0 lead with more than a third of the game left to play. The goal seemed to suck the life out of the Jacks as the Tritons added two more goals, striking in the 67th and 89th minutes.
The Jacks look to bounce back after the 5-0 loss as they travel to Cal State San Bernardino Sunday afternoon before returning to Arcata for their last three games of the season.
