ROHNERT PARK — Sonoma State powered away from Humboldt State behind a efficient offense that posted a .292 team hitting percentage on the way to a 25-13, 25-14, 25-11 win in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball action Wednesday.
Sonoma State remained unbeaten in CCAA matches, improving to 3-0 in league and 5-2 overall. Humboldt State fell to 0-3 in conference and 3-4 overall.
HSU was sluggish in the first set of its inaugural roadtrip of the season, allowing the Seawolves to build a 8-1 lead before chipping away. Still, the Jacks could only close within nine points after the first half of the set, with consecutive kills by SSU's Kelsey Hull helping end the one-sided set.
The Jacks leaped ahead, 4-0, in the second set when
Allison Drobish served for a pair of points and
Oceana Matsubu put down a kill for another. But the Seawolves pulled even at 7-7 and didn't look back on the way to an 11-point victory.
Following a brief Jacks' advantage in set No. 3, Sonoma gathered itself again, scoring seven straight points to pull ahead, 11-5. The Warriors rolled through a 10-point streak that included a pair of service aces by Sammi Bentovoja and four Jacks' attack errors. Regan Richert's kill ended the set and match.
Oceana Matsubu again provided the Jacks' main offensive threat, putting down a team-high six kills.
Alexa Rosendale contributed a team-best 7 digs, and
Bailey Kotas had six
Hull was the Seawolves' top point-producer, putting down a team-high 12 kills, and Keala Peterson added 10 with only two errors. Taylor Krenwinkel topped her team with 12 digs.
Sonoma State totaled 7.5 team blocks in the match to Humboldt State's 4. That effort marked the first time this season that the Jacks have been out-blocked.
Humboldt State remains on the road for two weekend games, traveling to Hayward to face Cal State East Bay on Friday, then heading to Seaside to play unbeaten Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
