Two rebounds cost Lumberjacks 2-0 loss

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – After out-shooting the Lumberjacks 29-5, the San Francisco State Gators capitalized on two second-half goals to beat Humboldt State 2-0 Friday afternoon.

The loss drops HSU 2-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, 2-4 overall, while SFSU improves to 3-2-2 overall, 2-2-1 in conference play. The Jacks travel further south to take on the South Division leaders Cal Poly Pomona Sunday at 2 p.m.

Humboldt State got the first shot of the game in the fourth minute off a header by Ray Lind, but the Gators kept the ball in the Lumberjacks' defensive third for much of the first half.

San Francisco's Edgar Villagrana got a good look on goal in the 26th minute that rocketed off the post. The rebound fell to Jose Monje at the back post, but his shot was cleared out of danger by Michael Powell.

"I felt the first half it wasn't a bad half for us at all," said head coach C.J. Johnson. "We were very fortunate on a couple SFSU attacks—hitting the crossbar and post—but played with lot of energy and our possession was good. We did good job combining given how difficult this field is to play on."

The Lumberjacks found themselves on the attack with a minute left in the first half when Zach Hammond was fouled just outside the 18-yard box. Dan Mariani sent the ball into the box, but the Gators cleared it away and began a counter-attack. SFSU's Luis Mendoza shot just wide of the net, sending the teams scoreless into halftime.

San Francisco continued to pressure Kyle Verle and his defense, breaking the scoreless draw in the 57th minute off a corner kick. Verle punched the cross out, but Jose Vitela collected the clearance and fired a shot off, hitting the crossbar. Luis Mendoza sent the rebound up and over Verle to give the Gators a 1-0 lead.

"We really want Kyle to catch those balls," said Johnson. "We didn't get a good clear and got caught watching."

Chuck Pitts' breakaway in the 63rd minute could have tied the game once again, but Scolman came far off his line to collapse on the ball and keep it out of danger.

Ten minutes later the Gators capitalized off a defensive mistake by the Lumberjacks to put the score at 2-0. Kenny Kim slipped a through ball into the 18-yard box to lead Medina. Verle blocked Medina's shot, but the deflection hit off an HSU defender and rolled into the net, giving San Francisco State the 2-0 victory.

"The biggest thing for us to realize is that in soccer you're going to give up goals, but there's always time to get an equalizer," said Johnson. "We give up the first goal and don't recover. We already think we're defeated so we need to overcome that mentality."
