"Other than a lull in that second set I thought we played alright tonight," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "We're playing with some confidence."
HSU controlled most of all three sets except for the brief let-up in the second that allowed the Toros to rally from a 10-4 deficit to take a 12-10 lead. Azieanna Smith hammered down four kills during the stretch to give her team hope.
Humboldt State pulled away again, moving to set point at 24-20 following
Ashley Neale's kill and an attack error by the Toros. But CSUDH held off the victory with three straight points before Matsubu ended it in the Jacks' favor.
The Lumberjacks cruised to victory in the opening set, breaking way after a 9-9 tie.
Allison Drobish began the assault with a block solo, and Matsubu combined with
Alexa Rosendale to produce the one-sided attack.
The third and final set again featured the hitting duo of Matsubu and Rosendale, who figured prominently in a nine-point run. Rosendale served a pair of aces and Matsubu contributed two kills and a block solo, helping HSU gain a 16-7 lead. Cal State Dominguez Hills got within seven points before Rosendale ended the match with consecutive kills.
Matsubu finished with a match-high 14 kills while also helping Humboldt with 12 digs. Rosendale had 12 kills, Drobish contributed seven blocks and
Brooke Ferguson topped the team with 15 digs.
"We have a much better balanced offense with both Osh (Matsubu) and Alexa (Rosendale) out there," Woodstra said. "Alexa is getting close to being 100 percent recovered from her ankle injury. You can see that in the progress we've made with our balance."
Cal State Dominguez Hills was led by Smith, who had 11 kills but also committed eight hitting errors. Elizabeth Krieger led the way with 21 digs.
Humboldt State remains home this week, facing Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday and UC San Diego on Friday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
