First-half scoring frenzy proves too much for Jacks comeback

Box Score POMONA – Five first-half goals were too much for the Lumberjacks to crawl back from in a 5-1 loss at South Division leader Cal Poly Pomona Sunday afternoon.

Humboldt State drops to 2-5-0 overall, 2-4-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action, as it returns home to host the North Division leader, Sonoma State. The Broncos improve to 6-2-0 overall, 5-1-0 in CCAA, with the win.

Cal Poly Pomona broke the scoreless seal in under three minutes when Luis Gonzalez scored his first goal of the game from just five yards in front of the goal.

Gonzalez and the Broncos continued to pressure the Lumberjack defense, with Gonzalez getting his second goal in the 11th minute. Juan Mejia led Gonzalez with a weighted ball where he dribbled past Kyle Verle to put Cal Poly Pomona up 2-0. Less than a minute later, Jonathan Enns put the Broncos up 3-0, slipping the ball into the lower left side of the goal past Verle.

Gonzalez completed his hattrick with 16:29 on the clock for his eighth goal of the season. Twenty-six seconds later, Fabian Perez capitalized on a bouncing ball in the box, sending it past Verle and creating a hole for the Lumberjacks to try to climb out of with over 70 minutes left in the game.

The Jacks didn't get a shot off in the first half until the 42nd minute when Zach Hammond's header was blocked by the Broncos, but Humboldt State came out of halftime hoping to get something on the scoreboard.

Ray Lind looked like he'd get that something in the 51st minute, but Cal Poly Pomona's Kris Minton was there to make the save. Minton didn't hold on to the ball, giving Eric Baumgardner a rebound, which he promptly slipped past Minton.

The goal gave the HSU offense hope for a comeback, outshooting the Broncos 11-7 in the second half, but the Jacks could not find the back of the net again—instead finding Minton, a post or missing just wide of the goal—leaving the final score at 5-1.
