Drobish moves up in record book in Jacks defeat

Box Score
ARCATA — Entering Thursday night's match against a strong Sonoma State, Allison Drobish only needed one more block to take sole possession of the No. 2 spot on the career blocking leader board. Drobish teamed up with teammates for two block assists and added a block solo for good measure, but couldn't help Humboldt State overcome the Seawolves as the Jacks fell 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-22).

"It's realy exciting [to hear I'm in the record book]," said Drobish. "I didn't even know since I hadn't been looking. I kind of didn't want to look and jinx it or anything."

Drobish's three blocks on the night put her career total to 345 blocks, 17 total blocks behind leader Danielle Wells and three blocks ahead of Hall of Fame member Jennifer Lundeen.

"It's great for Allison to move up in the record book," said head coach Sue Woodstra. "She's such a hard worker and puts up a good block. She's really done a nice job for us and has been a key for us the past couple of years."

Humboldt State drops to 3-25 overall, 1-20 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while Sonoma State improves to 21-8 overall and 15-6 in conference action.

Only three Lumberjacks registered attack percentages, with Drobish leading with a .286-percent off five kills. Alexa Rosendale led HSU with a match-high 13 kills to give her a .235 attack percentage and Merry Ellen Ackema put down three kills to grab a .250-percentage. Defensively, Tiffany McCray led with 11 digs to try to keep Humboldt State in the match.

Madelyn Densberger led Sonoma State with a .538 attack percentage off eight kills. Allyson Sather put down a team-high 10 kills to finish the night with a .429-percentage. Nicole Gragnola registered 17 digs on defense and picked up four aces on the night.

Humboldt State started off on a sour note, giving the Seawolves their first point of the night off a service error. Sonoma State took advantage of the lead and would not let the Jacks take it over despite HSU matching the visitors' points early in the set.

With the score at 10-6 in favor of the Seawolves, Sonoma State went on a five-point run off an HSU mistake, two aces from Densberger and two kills from Sather to put the score at 15-6. Humboldt State answered with its own multiple point run, picking up six unanswered points off three Seawolf errors, two aces and one of seven kills from Channel Washington to bring the Jacks within three points. The hole proved too much for Humboldt State to overturn, however, as Sonoma State powered through to a 25-15 first set victory.

Much like the first set, the second started with a service error, this time, however, against the Seawolves. The Jacks grabbed an early 2-0 lead, but Sonoma State tied the set up at 3-3 and gained momentum to take over the lead. With Humboldt State just two points behind SSU at 9-7, the Seawolves went on a seven-point run to go ahead 16-7.

Sonoma State continued to power down kills and found itself up 22-12. Determined to get back in the game, Humboldt State fought back to bring the set within three at 23-20, but the Seawolves found their last two points to take the set 25-21, needing just one more set to end the match.

Despite giving up an early 4-0 lead in the third, the Jacks put up a battle with the Seawolves. Drobish put down two aces in a row to bring the score to 10-8, but Sonoma State continued to keep Humboldt State at an arm's length. Just when the Jacks came close to tying the set, SSU would jump out in front again, making HSU have to catch up.

The Jacks finally caught up at 20-20, taking advantage of an attack error from the Seawolves and a kill from Kelci Renshaw, but SSU jumped out in front once again at 22-20.

Not willing to give in quite yet, the Jacks tied the score once more off a bad service from SSU and a kill from Rosendale. Humboldt State couldn't carry the momentum over, however, surrendering three more points to end the set 25-22.

HSU has one more match left in the 2012 season and will face San Francisco State on Saturday at Lumberjack Arena. Both the Jacks and the Gators lead the conference in services, so fans can expect to see tough serves from both sides of the net. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start time, but will feature a ceremony honoring the Jacks' two seniors (Rosendale and Drobish) before the first serve is played.
