Box Score ARCATA—Humboldt State fought through five sets against Cal State Monterey Bay and came out on top, snapping an 18-game losing streak. The Jacks beat the visiting Otters 3-2 (25-20, 18-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-6) Saturday night in front of a roaring home crowd.
The win improves the Jacks to 3-21 overall, 1-16 in conference play while CSUMB drops to 12-13 overall, 6-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
"We finally put it together and it feels really good because CSUMB challenged us quite a bit.," said head coach Sue Woodstra. "We had to step up and play hard and play some good volleyball, which we did."
Leading the Jacks was
Alexa Rosendale who finished the night with a double-double with 16 kills and 23 digs. Chanel Washington also ended the night with a double-double putting down 11 kills and 21 digs. Defensively,
Tiffany McCray came up with a season-high 29 digs.
Julia Ashen led the attack for the Otters with 20 kills, while Rachel Cookus
HSU set the pace for the opening set grabbing an early 7-4 lead. The Otters tried to close the gap but suffered from multiple errors, putting the Jacks farther ahead. To try and slow the game down, Cal State Monterey Bay called at timeout with the score at 21-13. Two Otters came back from the break to fire down four kills.
Feeling the pressure, HSU also called a timeout but came back from the short break and got the job done as the Jacks took the first set 25-20.
CSU Monterey Bay started with a two-point run in the second set but Humboldt State fought right back to get a 6-5 lead. The Otters tied the game in the next play with a kill from Victoria Clardy.
HSU was able to push past Monterey Bay one more time, bringing the score to 14-10. An attack error on
Ashley Neale and a receiving error on McCray put the Otters right behind the Jacks 15-16.
A kill by CSUMB's Janai Johnson tied the score 16-16. Humboldt State called a timeout but failed to get a head and watched the Otters take the second set 25-18.
The Jacks came back from the intermission break ready to take the third set. HSU was all over the court and kept the Otters behind at least two points throughout majority of the set to win 25-21.
Up two sets, Humboldt State was determined to win the fourth and take it all but the Otters were not going to give up that easily. An attack error on CSUMB put the Jacks on the board first.
Channel Washington followed with two service aces while Rosendale put down two-straight kills to give the Jacks a 5-0 lead.
Later tied at 16-16, CSU Monterey Bay came back to take the lead off a kill by Jessica Malcolm. CSUMB held the front position until the end, winning 25-21 to force a fifth and final set.
Humboldt State quickly shook off the fourth set loss and entered the final set ready to attack. The Jacks powered through to grab an early 10-3 lead. Cal State Monterey Bay called a timeout, but HSU came back loaded.
Kelci Renshaw and Washington put down four kills bringing the score to 14-6. An attack error on CSUMB gave the Jacks the final point for the 15-6 set win, giving Humboldt State its first CCAA match victory.
Next week the Jacks head out their last road trip of the season to face three conference opponents. Humboldt State plays Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday, Nov. 7, then Cal State Los Angeles on Friday, Nov. 9, and finally Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, Nov. 10. All three matches are scheduled for 7 p.m.
