Jacks fall to Broncos in conference opener

Box Score ARCATA—Humboldt State battled, but could not avoid the sweep Wednesday night, ultimately falling 0-3 (25-21, 25-23, 25-14) to Cal Poly Pomona in both teams' California Collegiate Athletic Association opener. The Jacks seem to be on the brink of getting wins, but head coach Sue Woodstra knows her team needs to have a collaborative effort to succeed.

"We get to a certain point and we just got to break through," said Woodstra. "We're all frustrated, the team is frustrated and I think they want to break through. Channel [Washington] had a great game, she did a really nice job. We gotta get everyone firing on all cylinders every night and all at the same time."

With the loss, the Lumberjacks fall to 2-6 overall, 0-1 in CCAA action, while the Broncos improve to 5-3 overall, 1-0 in conference play.

Channel Washington led the attack for the Lumberjacks with 10 kills, with no errors, and three aces. Sarah Wilber tallied 24 assists while Tiffany McCray came up with 15 digs.

Humboldt State grabbed an early lead in the first set, leading 4-1 over CPP, but unfortunately for the Jacks, it would be their only lead. Cal Poly Pomona was all over the court as four Broncos, Jessica Doerner, Diana Lake, Alexa Hasen and Nicoletta Stork, sent multiple kills down to put CPP in front.  The Lumberjacks battled to catch up but couldn't succeed as the Broncos took the set 25-21.

The Jacks bounced back strong after the fist set, capitalizing on multiple attack errors by the Broncos. The lead changed more than seven times throughout the set with the Jacks taking the lead off a kill by Washington to put HSU ahead 22-21.

However, the lead didn't last long as a kill by CPP's Lake and an attack error by McCray pushed the Broncos in front 23-22. Merry Ellen Ackema tied the game one last time at 23-23 with a much needed kill, but a serving error by Washington and attack error by Rosendale ended the set in favor of CPP 25-23 to put HSU in an 0-2 hole.

Both teams were neck-and-neck heading into the third set, however an attack error by Sara Wilber gave Cal Poly Pomona a 7-8 lead. The Broncos took advantage of the court after grabbing the lead, pushing the Jacks back nearly 10 points.

With a 10-21 score, Woodstra signaled for a timeout to re-group her team. Back on the court, the Jacks made a small comeback effort off an attack error by Christen Williams and back-to-back kills from Washington. The comeback wasn't enough though as the Broncos came back to power three more points to finish at 25-14 to end the match.

The Jacks travel south to Turlock to face Cal State Stanislaus on Friday and continue to Chico to end the weekend against Chico State, both matches set for 7 p.m. start times.
