Four goal second half propels HSU over SF State

Goalie Ryan Ades
Box Score ARCATA – Once the engine gets going the goals are going to follow.

It took almost the whole first half for Humboldt State men's soccer engine to get in full gear and break on to Friday's scoreboard, but running motor ended up pouring in a season-high total by the final horn.

For the first time in just under three years, the Lumberjacks booted the ball into the goal five times in the second shutout of the year, 5-0, over the Gators of San Francisco State.

"Today was another solid team performance.  We started a little slow, but stuck with it and fought together," said HSU head coach Fred Jungemann.  "We started to come into the game a bit more around 30 minutes in and only got better from there."

Zach Hammond's two goals including the first score in the final five minutes of the opening stanza led four different HSU goal scorers and seven total point producers in the winning cause.

"I am very proud of the way the guys stuck with the game plan, even after a bit of a rough start.  We had some great contributions from guys all over the field today.  It was a total team effort again today and the guys deserve all the credit for a well played game," added the Jacks' coach.

Forward Braxton Griffin registered his third consecutive match with a goal scored.

Sam Wahl and Ryan Connor accounted for the other two HSU (5-5-1/3-5-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association) goals with assists coming from Chuck Pitts, Peter Darquea and Quintin Aguilar.

HSU goalie Ryan Ades continues to improve in net and saved three shots in a combined shutout.  Freshman Chris Bean logged the final 10:48 to complete the blanking of the Gators.

The Jacks held a slim 7-6 shot margin in the first 45 minutes before more than doubling, 16-7, the amount of boots in the second stanza for a final tally of 23-13.

Hammond was able to put the HSU in gear with his first score.  Pitts passed the ball ahead down the left sideline to Hammond, who dribbled through three San Francisco State (3-7-1/2-6-1 CCAA North) defenders before kicking the ball into the left side of the net to make it 1-0.

The Jack immediately put the heat on in the Gator's kitchen to start half number two.

Along the left sideline, Griffin found himself suddenly with the ball wide open so he cocked him foot and pelted the ball past the SFSU netminder on the right side with only 2:24 elapsed in the second half.

In the 67th-minute, Darquea lofted a long 40-yard free kick towards the goal, which Hammond leaped and headed it into the goal directly into the left side.

After being taken down in the penalty box five minutes later, Hammond saw his bid for a 'hat trick' turned away by Gators' goalie Colt Reichl.  The goalkeeper played the penalty kick off his hands where Wahl took the rebound and hit it into the goal for the home team's fourth goal at 72:14.

HSU capped its big scoring day at 80:31.  Aguilar crossed the ball from the right corner, where a sliding Connor pushed it past the SFSU goalie into the goal to take the match to the eventual 5-0 final.

The Jacks will look for their first home weekend sweep in a 2 p.m. Sunday affair against the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay.
