Box Score ARCATA – Some wins are not ones you want to make highlight reels from and Thursday night was the case for Humboldt State.

Following a rough opening set, the Lumberjacks' defense spurred the squad to victory to outlast the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus, 3-1.

"After the first set, we got it together.  We started passing much better and limited our front row mistakes," said HSU head coach Kelly Wood

The aforementioned first set saw the visiting Warriors run off seven points in a row to mount a 20-9 lead before taking the contest 25-13.

The bad set result was not repeated again the rest of the Jacks night.

Led by the defense, HSU tied the match at one game apiece with a 25-19 second set win to head into intermission.  The Jacks hung on for the important game three, 25-23, before finishing the match with a 25-21 game four victory.

The Jacks move back over the .500 mark at 9-8 and improve to 4-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

"Our defense was really good tonight.  We had good defensive effort from a lot of players from Kelci (Renshaw) to Symone (Hayden) to (Kaitlyn) Dunaway and Colleen (Noonan)."

With various long rallies, HSU compiled 94 digs in the four-set affair led by a career-best 29 from Renshaw, who also lined three service aces.

"We had a well-rounded effort as there were sustained rallies from neither team being able to put the ball away at times and we just outlasted them.  I am pleased with the win," added Wood.

Hayden joined Renshaw with 17 digs, while downing 10 kills, lining an ace and handing out an assist.

Ashley Owen and Dunaway tied for the HSU kill honors with 16 apiece.  Dunaway added 14 digs, an ace and an assist to her line.

Alex Hasenstab and Courtney Debrunner chipped in five and four kills with a block assist each.

Sam Siebert handed out 44 assists, laced four aces, dug 13 balls and combined for a block assist in an all-around night.

Noonan and Erin Mitchell rounded out the effort with 12 and four digs.

Tied at 20 in the third set and one game each, Cal State Stanislaus (5-13/2-8 CCAA) earned the next three points to move ahead, 23-20.

A Hayden kill started five consecutive points, where the redshirt freshman served out the game for the last four points including one ace for a 25-23 final and 2-1 HSU set lead.

In the fourth set, the teams found themselves tied at 21.

HSU closed out the match when Debrunner downed a kill in the middle and Dunaway followed with back-to-back kills, before a Warrior error made the 25-21 final.

The Jacks will stay at home for the weekend second CCAA match of the week.  HSU will entertain Chico State on 'Dig for a Cure' Night in Lumberjack Arena starting at 7 p.m.
