HSU seeks back-to-back strong matches

Peter Darquea (13) celebrates a goal with Jordan Zogg
ARCATA - The men's soccer results have seen a pattern form during the majority of the season, but will look to reverse the trend this weekend.

The Lumberjacks have had a difficult equalling a stronger Friday effort two days later in the second of the weekend matches.

Humboldt State will have the opportunity to buck this trend on the road for the second week in a row.  the men face Sonoma State for the first time in two weeks in a 3 p.m. Friday bout, before battling Cal State East Bay on Sunday morning.

     Jacks shut out Coyotes

The Jacks used a pair of first half goals including one from the CCAA's leading scorer Zach Hammond to defeat the host Coyotes of CSU San Bernardino, 2-1.

HSU put its first goal on the board early compliments of Hammond, his 11th goal of the year, at 5:54 one a give-and-go play from by Sam Wahl.

At 36:08, Connor Wilkinson added the Jacks' second first half score on a penalty kick following a Coyotes' yellow card.

The HSU team performance had to fend off CSU San Bernardino for the majority of the second half.

Juan Gonzalez connected off a David Perez pass on a crossing pass in front of the goal only 5:48 into the second stanza to cut it to 2-1.

Jacks' goalie Ryan Ades and the defense had to fend off four more shots in the final almost 40 minutes of the contest to secure the victory.

     #25 Wildcats dominate Jacks

The 25th-ranked Wildcats smothered the Jacks' attack, while finding the net once in each half of a 2-0 blanking.

Chico State dominated the shots by a 16-1 margin including 11-1 in the opening 45 minutes.

Octavio Guzman put the home team on the board at 18:00 on a low boot from 15 yards.

The Jacks' lone shot of the first half and match came on a Ryan Connor head that went high with 32:57 coming off the clock.

Goalie Ryan Ades made three saves in net for HSU.

     Tough Sundays over fall

The second matchup of the fall weekends have turned out to be difficult for HSU men's soccer.  HSU fell to 0-5-1 including two overtime defeats on Sunday matches over the past six weeks.

Over the six Sunday bouts, HSU has been outscored 16-7 including 5-1 over the last two matches against Cal State Monterey Bay (3-1) and Chico State (2-0).

Coach Jungemann's comments on last weekend:

"Friday's game was a difficult game against a strong San Bernardino team, on a hot day, on a big field, after a long journey.  It was a very good team performance, under those difficult circumstance, that allowed us to get a good result.  We got an early goal, and a great free kick goal right before the half to wrap up a quality first half performance.  The second half was relatively uneventful, other than conceding an unfortunate goal, as the guys managed the game very well to close out a great road win.

Sunday's game was most likely a result of the heat on Friday and the extraordinarily long bus trips over three straight days, combining to take our legs out from under us.  Chico are a very good team and certainly did their best to make the game hard for us.   It was quite a ways off of our best performance of the year, but we will need to recover quickly as we face another long road trip again this coming weekend."

     Hammond ties for 6th most

The CCAA's leading scorer Zach Hammond continues to score goals at the league's top pace.

The senior forward added an 11th goal last Friday to tie for the 6th most in a season by an HSU player.

Hammond is tops in the CCAA with the 11 goals and 44 shots taken, while second in total points score with 25.

Coach Jungemann's comments on this weekend:

"This weekend will be the first time we face SSU, who are several points above us in the north division.  It will be a huge game for both of us, as it will have a big impact on our both of our standings in the north.  East Bay have been improving throughout the year and I anticipate that they will be looking for revenge from our early game.  We are coming to the end of the regular season and every game is big, as everyone is pushing to finish strong."
