Box Score ARCATA – Quality teams take advantage of opponent miscues. 16
th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino is one of the quality NCAA Division II and benefited off Humboldt State volleyball errors.
As has been the case in the first two California Collegiate Athletic Association pair of matches, the Lumberjacks dropped the first match of the pair, 3-0, to the highly-ranked Coyotes.
CSU San Bernardino scored seven of eight points early in the opening set to open a five-point lead and would never give it up for a 25-21 win. The visitors followed with a second victory after opening a 9-3 lead and allowed the Jacks no closer than four points most of the match in a 25-15 bout.
HSU (7-5/2-3 CCAA) led by as many as six points and failed to convert on four set points to fall in an extended third set, 28-30, to end the night.
"They were a solid team," noted HSU head coach
Kelly Wood. "Our serve and receive game was not very good tonight and we cannot have it not be good against a top team like we face tonight. We missed nine service errors and we can't have both (serving and receiving) going wrong and neither working."
The Jacks gave away 17 points in the three sets with nine service errors and eight reception miscues, while hitting only .143 for the match with 23 hitting errors as well.
Symone Hayden paced the HSU offense with 13 kills to go with 10 digs and a solo block.
Ashley Owen added 12 kills with one error in 27 attacks for the top hitting percentage of .407 with four digs and two block assists.
Kaitlyn Dunaway chipped in nine kills, seven digs and two block assists. Middle blocker
Courtney Debrunner contributed four kills and three block assists.
Sam Siebert handed out 36 assists and dug nine balls.
Colleen Noonan led the defensive effort with 11 digs and a service ace.
Kelci Renshaw had nine digs and three assists.
The Coyotes (10-4) improved to 6-0 to continue as the lone perfect squad in CCAA play.
After the intermission down two sets, HSU showed it young heart in a spirited third set.
Holding onto a two-point lead, the Jacks ran off four points in a row for their largest lead of the night, 16-10, off a Debrunner kill, Coyotes error, Noonan ace and Dunaway kill.
Cal State San Bernardino came right back with five-straight tallies to make it 16-15.
The sides exchanged short spurts to come to an even score of 20 apiece.
From that point, HSU had four set point opportunities, but were unable to convert. Trailing 28-27, the Coyotes finished off the home team with three points in a row for the 30-28 victory and three-set sweep.
'I liked our ability to fight back in the third set. We didn't finish but had chances to win the third set," added the HSU coach.
The third set of CCAA matches get no easier for HSU when 12
th-ranked UC San Diego invades Lumberjack Arena on Saturday night for a 7 p.m. affair.
"We can't miss nine serves and will need to pass a lot better to be able to capitalize on the opponent Saturday night. We want to continue to be able to bounce back strong in the second match of the weekend again," concluded Wood.
