Jacks have enough to corral Toros on pitch

Chuck Pitts
Box Score ARCATA – Being back on the friendly confides of College Creek Field, Humboldt State was able to have enough to corral Cal State Dominguez on the men's soccer pitch on Friday afternoon.

After a Lumberjacks' goal by Chuck Pitts midway in the opening half, Braxton Griffin added a second at 67:59 and the home club held off a charging Toros squad, 2-1, for the victory.

HSU (4-4-1) snapped a three-match losing streak with its second home win in three home dates. The Jacks' victory is also the second California Collegiate Athletic Association win to go to 2-4-1.

The home squad also secured its first win over the Toros since 2006 and only the second in nine all-time series meetings.

"I am very proud of today's performance.  It was a total team effort from start to finish and the guys got the results they thoroughly deserved against an exceptional opponent in Dominguez Hills.  We took a big step forward again today and improved on the effort we gave last Sunday," said Jacks head coach Fred Jungemann.

The total team effort helped HSU work out to a 2-0 advantage halfway through the second stanza.

Defender Nate Roupp initiated the opening tally of the match. The backline anchor booted a pass deep through the middle of the field to a running Pitts, who took the ball and beat the Toros' keeper Markus Dickerson in the lower right of the box at 22:03

HSU's leading-goal scorer Zach Hammond took a turn at assisting on Friday.  The senior forward played the ball down the right sideline through the Cal State Dominguez Hills defense to Griffin. With the ball, Griffin dribbled in and shot the ball to the left past the visiting keeper with 67:59 expired and 2-0 lead.

The formerly-ranked Toros (5-2-2/3-2-2 CCAA) turned up the heat in the last 15 minutes of play.

After a flurry in the Jacks end, Aaron Salazar fired a crossing pass 20 yards from right to left to Miguel Vazquez, who put the ball in the upper left to make it a 2-1 contest at 78:51.

The Toros were called offsides at 84:38 after thinking they had tied the contest.

The visitors edged out a 15-13 shot tally but the Jacks' goalie Ryan Ades had a good effort in net. The senior Ades saved six shots in the 90 minutes of play.

"I am very happy for the guys that they were able to get the results their teamwork and commitment today deserved," added Jungemann.
HSU will have the short Friday evening to enjoy the spoils of the win, before getting ready for 18th-ranked Cal State Los Angeles in a 2 p.m. home match.
