Box Score ARCATA – On an unusually hot day in the area, the action on the pitch was just as hot in what was an evenly-matched and exciting men's soccer affair.
It took an extra 6:25 into the first overtime to find a winner in the California Collegiate Athletic Association contest.
Off a short pass from the left flat, 18
th-ranked Cal State Los Angeles' Halil Tozar fired the ball into the net amidst heavy pressure from 12 yards in front for the 3-2 win over Humboldt State on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles goal fittingly gave them the edge, 18-17, in shots for the game.
It was the second one goal match of the weekend for HSU (4-5-1/2-5-1 CCAA North), which defeated previously-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-1 on Friday.
"We have played well against some of the top teams in our conference this season, and today was another example of that," noted Lumberjacks' head coach
Fred Jungemann. "However, in big games against strong teams like CSULA, even the smallest mistakes or lack of execution can mean the difference in the game."
HSU had all the momentum with just over 15 minutes left in the contest.
After a CSULA foul,
Zach Hammond blistered a free kick from the top of the box and curled it around the wall and into the goal for a 2-1 home lead.
The ranked Golden Eagles would mount a stiff challenge five minutes later.
At 79:02, Tozar booted the ball to a cutting Andre Bissmark on the right side, who put it into the left side of the goal for a 2-2 deadlock.
The two CCAA squads could not muster another score in the final 11 minutes for the overtime ending.
"We played a very good game today, but a few moments cost us dearly. It is a lesson we must learn and improve on in order to take the next step in our development," added Jungemann.
CSULA posted the lone first half tally on the board right before intermission at 43:49.
Off the chest of Hammond,
Braxton Griffin played the ball into the lower right corner of the Golden Eagles' goal to tie the match, 1-1, with 60:21 elapsed in the match.
In goal,
Ryan Ades saves seven shots for the Jacks including six in the second 45 minutes.
HSU remain home for its next match on Friday starting at 3 p.m. against San Francisco State.
