HSU drops four-set bout to CCAA-leading #13 CSU San Bernardino

Erin Mitchell (3) and Colleen Noonan (13)
Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – Despite coming out strong from the intermission, Humboldt State was unable to sustain its momentum against its second ranked foe in as many nights.

Behind 2-0, HSU would not trail in set number three for a 25-17 win and pull within a set.  The 13th-rated Cal State San Bernardino club would regain its footing with a key six-straight points for a 25-13 fourth set for the 3-1 victory.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association-leading Coyotes (20-5/16-1 CCAA) grabbed the opening pair of sets, 25-19 and 25-20.

"The team came out tonight much more motivated than last night and we played well at times," explained HSU head coach Kelly Wood.  "In the third set, we were siding out very well and we made it look easy, but then the passing broke down again in the fourth, which led to hitting errors at the net.

HSU (10-15/5-13) received double-digit kill nights from both Kaitlyn Dunaway and Ashley Owen.

Dunaway lined 13 kills to go with five digs, two assists, an ace and a block assist.

Owen added 12 kills, while digging four balls, assisting on one kill and combining for a block assist.

Alex Hasenstab chipped in six kills and a block.  Symone Hayden and Courtney Debrunner rounded out the frontline Lumberjacks for seven kills, five digs and two blocks together.

Sam Siebert assisted on 30 kills.  The senior also had seven digs, two aces, a kill and a block.

Kelci Renshaw led the defense with 14 digs, while lacing a pair of aces, handing out two assists and dinking a kill.

Colleen Noonan contributed five digs and a kill with Danielle Carlson having nine digs, an ace and an assist.  Erin Mitchell completed the HSU line with one dig and one assist.

"Overall, the effort level was good.  The girls played hard, but we allow teams to make big runs on us too often.  We did ourselves into a hole that we are unable to climb out of," finished Wood.

Tied at nine, the Coyotes produced the next five points top open a 14-9 advantage in the first set.  Hayden pulled HSU within three, 20-17, but could get no closer in the 25-19 final.

The Jacks were only a point behind, 12-11, midway through the second set.  CSU San Bernardino posted the next three points and held off the visitors to take the set, 25-20.

HSU ran out to an 8-2 third set after the intermission period behind two Renshaw aces and kills from Owen and Dunaway.  The Jacks led by as many as seven two times, 19-12 and 20-13, before its largest lead for the final 25-17 tally.

The Coyotes spurted six points in a row to break a deadlocked fourth set for a 12-6 score.  HSU would get no closer than three points the rest of the way to fall 25-13.

HSU will return home for its final pair of home matches next week.  The two home matches will begin with a Thursday night bout with 14th-ranked Sonoma State starting at 7 p.m.
