Jacks rally strong from game down to take Hawks in five

Box Score BELMONT – Humboldt State found a new way to post a volleyball win, but it took a strong finish to do it.
 
After a 25-21 opening set win to start the match, the Lumberjacks stumbled in the next two contests, which went to Holy Names, 25-22 and 25-18.
 
With their backs against the wall, HSU (5-2) built an early lead and rode it to a 25-14 win to even the match at two games apiece.  The Jacks netted the final five points of the match-deciding game five for a 15-10 score to take the 3-2 win.
 
Ashley Owen continued her solid day with a team-best 17 kills, while hitting .361 with four digs and two solo blocks.
 
Courtney Debrunner set a new kill standard for herself with 12 as she hit .400. She added three block assists and a dig.
 
Kaitlyn Dunaway contributed 11 kills, 12 digs, a pair of block assists and a set assist. Symone Hayden finished with nine kills, seven digs, three block assists and an assist.
 
Alex Hasenstab registered only three kills but two of them came in key moments. One of her spikes was amidst a first game run and the third kill finished the match for the team win. The freshman also had three total blocks and a dig.
 
Sam Siebert set 45 kills, dug nine balls, downed two kills and lined an ace.
 
Colleen Noonan produced a pair of aces with her second one coming to give HSU a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the fifth set. She also had 14 digs.
 
Kelci Renshaw manned the defense with 15 digs, two assists and an ace.
 
The rally was aided the whole way down the line of Jacks players with Jacquelyn Callaway had nine digs and an assist and Erin Mitchell rounding out with three digs, two assists and an ace.
 
After falling behind by a game, 2-1, HSU circled the wagons as it came out for game four.
 
The Jacks edged ahead 10-6 before extending the difference to 13-7 on a Hawks' attack error.
 
HSU held the lead of at least four points the rest of the way.  Leading 20-14, Hayden and Debrunner downed kills before Holy Names (0-8) ended the game on three attack errors for the 25-14 final.
 
In the game-ending set tied at three, Holy Names made another attack error before Noonan laced an ace to give HSU a 5-3 lead.
 
The Jacks would be able to keep the lead for the match win.
 
At 11-10, HSU registered the final four tallies on spikes from a Debrunner kill, Mitchell service ace and an Owen kill before Hasenstab downed the clinching kill for the 15-10 score.
 
In the first game, Holy Names led 18-12 before a HSU 9-2 run made it 21-20 Jacks.  A Siebert ace and Dunaway kill helped HSU finish off the 25-21 opener.
 
After seven road contests, HSU will have five days off before its Lumberjack Arena and California Collegiate Athletic Association home opener.  The Jacks will host the Golden Eagles of Cal State Los Angeles on Thursday night starting at 7 p.m.
