HSU ready to test home waters

Maddi Null
Following three victories in the four opening road contests, the Humboldt State women's soccer team will now ready themselves to test the home waters in a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association affairs.

Jacks tie most wins in three years

The road to respectability takes many steps in the process and a quality opening four matches has been one.

HSU has recorded victories in three of its first four contests. The three wins ties the program's most wins over in three seasons. The Jacks concluded the 2011 campaign with a 3-13-2 mark and are now one victory away from tying the 2010 total of four (4-13-1).

Jacks defense pitches second shutout

A defensive emphasis instituted by new head coach Paul Karver has paid off in the opening four matches.

HSU has recorded two shutouts coming over Dominican and San Francisco State by the same 1-0 finals.

The Jacks have allowed six overall goals in 360 minutes of play for a 1.50 goals against average.

The defensive numbers look even more stout upon taking out the one team loss, where Cal State Monterey Bay found the back of the net five times.  In the other three matches, HSU holds a 0.33 goals against average with only a single goal in the three victories.

Mitchell develops knack for big goals

As one of the team leaders, junior midfielder Lizzie Mitchell seems to be developing a knack for big goals for HSU this fall.

The team leader booted the lone scores in both of HSU's 1-0 shutout victories.

Mitchell has two goals and an assist for the year.

Behen making scoring combo

Along with Lizzie Mitchell, junior Colette Behen is showing the form that helped her to be the team's leading scorer last year.  Behen netted one of the two Jacks goal in defeat at CSU Monterey Bay before assisting on Mitchell's game-winner at SF State.

Woolcock makes most of first start

In her first action of the season, goalkeeper Amber Woolcock made the most of her first 90 minutes in goal.

Along with the HSU defensive front, Woolcock stopped six San Francisco State shots including the final one coming as time ran out in regulation to seal her shutout.

Coach Paul Karver comment on this week:

"This weekend presents a great opportunity for us to play against two very good opponents.  We are looking forward to being at home this weekend for a very important second week of the conference season."
