Box Score POMONA – The scoreboard didn't show the progress for the Jacks on the men's soccer pitch Sunday.
After leading 1-0 at the half, the scoreboard was three times with two coming only 50 seconds apart by host Cal Poly Pomona on the way to a 4-1 victory over Humboldt State.
HSU's
Zach Hammond was fouled and converted on his penalty kick with 57 seconds left in the contest for the visiting goal.
"Today was a much improved performance over Friday. The result may not reflect it, but our guys took a big stride forward in this match," pointed out Lumberjacks' head coach
Fred Jungemann. "Pomona did a great job of capitalizing on our mistakes, while we didn't take advantage of our chances."
Even with the goal differential, the Jacks (3-4-1/1-4-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association) were only outshot by one attempt, 13-12.
In goal, senior
Ryan Ades stopped four Cal Poly Pomona shots.
At 34:08, the Broncos' Daniel Garcia, Jr. took a long cross to the right, dribbled in and put the ball into the right side of the net for the lone first half score.
Cal Poly Pomona (5-2-1/3-2-1 CCAA) pulled away in a short period of time. Just under 20 minutes into the second period, Brandon Cortez found the next for the first of his two goals in the game. Cortez took a deflection in the box, before putting it into the upper left part of the goal.
Jesus Mitre put the Broncos up by a 3-0 margin only 50 seconds later off a crossing pass to convert it into the goal.
In the final minute, Hammond fired his penalty kick into the lower right for the lone HSU goal.
"We will look to build on this performance though as we look forward to playing at home next weekend," added the HSU coach.
The Jacks will have their second pair of home matches next weekend. HSU will host Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday starting at 3 p.m., before entertaining Cal State Los Angeles next Sunday beginning at 2 p.m.
