Symone Hayden,
Ashley Owen and
Kaitlyn Dunaway helped record the second win of the Nanook Classic held at the University of Alaska.
In fact, the trio and the rest of first-year head coach
Kelly Wood's young group were nearly perfect in the 2013 opening weekend of action.
The Lumberjacks saw the 12
th-ranked Phoenix of Fresno Pacific rally from a 2-1 deficit to pull out a tight fifth set, 15-12, for the 3-2 win.
The 2-1 HSU record earned the team a runner-up placing of the four-team Nanook Classic field.
On Saturday evening, the three HSU spikers combined for an impressive 55 kills and powered the squad to a weekend best .271 hitting percentage as a team.
Hayden had top Jacks' kill honors with 23 along with her best hitting percentage of the three games of .283. She also dug 13 attacks.
Dunaway continued her all-around early season with 16 kills and 18 digs while adding an assist, one ace and a block.
For their efforts, Hayden and Dunaway were both honored with selection onto the Nanook Classic All-Tournament team.
Owen hit .353 herself with 16 kills to her credit. She also had a block and a dig.
For a second time in three contests, HSU fell behind by dropping the first set by a 27-25 tally.
Colorado Christian (1-2) could not hold the momentum. HSU bounced back to capture the next three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 26-24 to prevail in four games.
Erin Mitchell dished out 61 assists to direct the offense to go with 11 digs, an ace and one kill.
Middle hitter
Alex Hasenstab blocked three attacks while producing seven kills.
Courtney Debrunner chipped in seven kills and four digs of her own.
Kelci Renshaw had 16 digs on the defense and gave out five assists.
Rounding out the Jacks' stats,
Danielle Carlson added six digs and a kill with
Colleen Noonan having three digs.
HSU will now have almost a full week of practice in preparations for a second two-day tournament. The Jacks will take part in the Route 92 Tournament, which will be held at Cal State East Bay and Notre Dame de Namur on Friday and Saturday.
