Jacks Try to Build on CCAA Start

   Full Game Notes

    ARCATA, Calif. - Humboldt State men's soccer will try to build upon its perfect California Collegiate Athletic Association start in the second week of league action.

     The Lumberjacks will travel to Turlock for a 4:30 p.m. Friday match at Cal State Stanislaus. HSU will make its way back to the North Coast for a 2 p.m. Sunday match at home against San Francisco State.
 

BEST CCAA START

     The Jacks started CCAA play with their best start since joining the conference. HSU recorded two overtime road victories at Cal State East Bay and Sonoma State.

     HSU's Friday win signified the program's first time since its inaugural CCAA season to open with a league victory. The other opening victory came on Sept. 6, 2006 with a 2-1 win over Cal State Los Angeles.
 

FIRST CCAA WEEKEND SWEEP

     Along with its first perfect start, HSU recorded its first CCAA weekend sweep in the nine-year membership. 

     Last weekend's sweep also resulted in the Jacks equalling their season win total from a year ago. HSU improved to 6-1-1 on the year, after it recorded a 6-11-1 mark last season.
 

GRIFFIN CONTINUES POINT PRODUCTION

     Braxton Griffin continued his point production last weekend. The junior striker blasted Friday night's game-winner at 92:53 of overtime for the 1-0 victory. Griffin followed the game-winning score with assists on the Jacks' first two Sunday goals in a 3-2 win at Sonoma State.

     The Issaquah, Wash., product has recorded points in six of the team's eight matches. He leads the squad with 13 points, five goals and three assists.

     Griffin rates both second in goal and points in the latest CCAA individual rankings.


PITTS REGISTERS HAT TRICK

     Chuck Pitts had his best game of his HSU career on Sunday afternoon. The Jacks' junior recorded his first collegiate hat trick and provided all three goals of the 3-2 victory at Sonoma State.

     Pitts spread out his three scores. His first one came only four minutes into the action, before knocking in the second 12 minutes into the second half. Pitts provided the post game celebration by firing in the game-winner at 93:37 of the first overtime period.

     The forward's three goals gives ties him with Braxton Griffin for a team-high five scores. He also rates second with 12 points.

     His 23 shots and 11 shots on goals are the fifth-best numbers in the CCAA rankings.


TORRES POSTS SECOND SHUTOUT

     Goalie Javier Torres recorded his second shutout of the 2014 season Friday night. 

     Torres stopped two Cal State East Bay shots to get the shutout, 1-0, as he logged 92:53 minutes in goal.

     The senior registered his first blanking of an opponent in the second match of the year, 4-0, at William Jessup.

     For the year, Torres has a 0.85 goals against average, the CCAA's sixth-best rate. He also has 27 saves and a .794% save percentage.
 

SCOUTING THIS WEEK'S LUMBERJACK OPPONENTS:

Cal State Stanislaus (3-3-2 / 1-0-1 CCAA)

     • HSU lead series 25-23-2

     • Warriors have won the last four meetings

     • CSUS won both meetings last season:

+ 3-2 in Arcata (9-22-13) & 2-1 in Turlock (11-1-13)

     • HSU last win in Turlock came in 3rd match of the 2005 season by a 1-0 score

     • CSUS holds a 1-11-1 advantage since HSU joined the CCAA

     • Manny Villegas, Jose Acosta and Josue Barajas are tied for team lead with 4 points apiece

     • Clint Long has a 1.13 goals against average


San Francisco State (5-1-2 / 1-0-1 CCAA)

     • HSU leads series 31-25-8

     • Jacks claimed the last match, 5-0, in Arcata (10-11-13)

     • Teams tied in the first meeting last year in San Francisco, 1-1, (9-15-13)

     • SFSU holds a 6-5-2 advantage since HSU joined the CCAA

     +HSU is 4-2 vs. SFSU in Arcata as a CCAA member

     • Sam Merritt leads the team with seven points off two goals and three assists, while second in shots (18)

     • Kevin Johnson is tops in CCAA with 15 shots on goal and second in shots (27)

     • Goalie Daniel Boyer is second in the CCAA with a .867 save percentage and third in goals against average (0.55)
