Box Score TURLOCK, Calif. –
Chuck Pitts made the most of his team's first shot on goal in Friday's match. In the 72
nd minute, the Humboldt State forward booted the attempt and connected on the match's lone goal in a 1-0 shutout over Cal State Stanislaus Friday afternoon.
On his shot, Pitts dribbled into the box, worked around four defenders and fired his shot into the upper left of the goal. The junior saw the Lumberjack defense led by three outstanding saves by goalie
Javier Torres preserve the scoreless match before and after the HSU goal.
The Lumberjacks (7-1-1) ran its unbeaten streak to eight matches and third win in a row. HSU also improved to a perfect 3-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Lumberjack win is the first victory in Turlock since a similar 1-0 final back in the 2005 season, and the win snapped a five-match losing streak at Warrior Stadium. The Warriors fell to 3-4-2 and 1-1-1 in the CCAA.
"Today was another very tough CCAA match and a great road win for our guys. Stanislaus played very well at home and certainly throughout the game tonight," said HSU Head Coach
Fred Jungemann. "We received another strong defensive performance again tonight and
Chuck Pitts came through with another nicely taken goal."
For the second time in as many matches, Pitts accounted for the game-winning goal. The Manhattan Beach, Calif., native netted his first collegiate hat trick to help defeat Sonoma State, 3-2, last Sunday and assisted on the game-winner, 1-0, at Cal State East Bay a week ago.
The Jacks' defense played an even bigger part of the shutout win. It was the third shutout and sixth time allowing one goal or less in nine matches.
After one early save, Torres played his best match of the season. He snatched a ball off the foot of Cal State Stanislaus' Jose Luis Rodriguez from point blank range with four seconds left in the first half to keep a 0-0 score.
Following an early second half save, Torres equaled his other goal-saving stop by punching out the boot by Warriors' Manny Villegas at 60:45.
Down 1-0, Villegas blasted the home team's best shot in the final 10 minutes. The Warrior's shot from the close right hit the crossbar and over the goal. Torres and the HSU defense did not allow another hard shot to complete the 1-0 shutout.
HSU will return to home this Sunday afternoon when it hosts San Francisco State starting at 2 p.m.
"It will be great to be back home on Sunday against San Francisco State and we look forward to another great Jacks home crowd," said Jungemann.
