Jacks Look to Continue Best CCAA Start

     Full Game Notes

ARCATA, Calif. - Humboldt State men's soccer looks to continue its best California Collegiate Athletic Association start and best season beginning in two decades. For the first time since joining the CCAA eight years ago, the Lumberjacks sit atop the standings with a 4-0 mark after two weeks of matches.

HSU is set to keep its run going strong by hosting rival Chico State at College Creek Field Friday afternoon in a 3 p.m. match, before it faces Cal State San Bernardino at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

PAIR OF CCAA SWEEPS

After sweeping their first CCAA road pair of matches, the Jacks duplicated the feat last weekend.

HSU shutout Cal State Stanislaus on the road and it came home to record a 3-2 double overtime victory over San Francisco State.

HSU now sits atop the CCAA standings with No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona with perfect 4-0 records.

AIM FOR MOST CCAA VICTORIES IN FOUR SEASONS

Over the first two league weekends, the Jacks have four conference wins. The CCAA win total ties HSU's last three full season totals – 2013 (4-11-1), 2011 (4-12) and 2010 (4-10-2).

With a win this weekend, HSU ties its most CCAA victories since the 2009 season (5-8-3).

BECOMING MASTERS OF EXTRA TIME

The mark of a good team is finding a way to win. HSU has found a way to win in eight of its first 10 matches of the season.

The Jacks have been masters of extra time their four overtime matches. HSU produced a 3-0-1 record in those overtime games. It played to a double overtime, 1-1, deadlock with BYU-Hawai'i, before claiming CCAA victories at Cal State East Bay (1-0 OT), at Sonoma State (3-2 OT) and against San Francisco State (3-2 2OT).

TORRES SAVES JACKS IN TURLOCK

Goalie Javier Torres showed his ability with three match-saving stops last Friday at Cal State Stanislaus. The senior stopped a pair of first half Warriors' attacks including one four seconds before the end of the first half. Torres also deflected one save over the goal on a shot to maintain the shutout, 1-0.

PITTS ADD ANOTHER GOAL

Fresh off his first collegiate hat trick the previous match, Chuck Pitts added his second game-winning score in a row with the lone goal in HSU's 1-0 win over Cal State Stanislaus.

Pitts shares the HSU lead and stands second in the CCAA in both goals (6) and points (15). The junior also rates third in conference for shots (27), fourth in shots on goal (14) and 10th in assists (three).

MURAO BLASTS GAME-WINNER

After helping the HSU defense shutout Cal State Stanislaus, Kenji Murao ended double overtime at 107:53 with a booming 35-yard boot into the right side of the goal to propel HSU past San Francisco State, 3-2, last Sunday. It was Murao's first goal of the season.
